Gwen K. Stahnke Recognized as Dedicated Professional in Science-Based Turfgrass Education
Gwen K. Stahnke honored by Cambridge Who's Who for professional excellence at Washington State Univeristy
PUYALLUP, WA, July 14, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gwen K. Stahnke, Associate Professor for the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in turfgrass science.
Specialized in integrated turfgrass management, Gwen K. Stahnke is noted as a leading pioneer in environmental studies. Possessing 37 years of field experience, Dr. Stahnke's professional history includes positions such as extension turfgrass specialist and assistant agronomist with the Research and Extension Center of Washington State University in Puyallup, teaching and research assistant with the University of Nebraska, nursery and sod farm manager with Glen Oak Turf, Inc., and area agronomist with The TruGreen Companies L.L.C.. For the last 21 years, she has functioned as Extension Turfgrass Specialist for Washington State University, overseeing issues involving turfgrass in 39 Washington counties and instructing online turfgrass courses.
Initially inspired to enter the environmental studies field through her love for the outdoors, Dr. Stahnke has dedicated herself to continuing educational efforts to promote science-based information regarding turfgrass. In five years, she hopes to become a full professor at Washington State University.
Dr. Stahnke was the recipient of the Research Excellence Award in 2003 and 2008 from the Seed Research of Oregon. She holds a Ph.D. in Horticultur Forestry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln — an achievement she considers to be the highlight of her career — a master of science in agronomy from Texas A&M University, and a bachelor of science in ornamental horticulture from the University of Illinois. She is a member of the Sports Turf Managers Association, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.
