/Golf News Articles/ - HUNT VALLEY, MD, October 20, 2006 - The fourth Constellation Energy Golf Classic opened on September 11, with a 1 p.m. Pro-Am Shotgun Start at the Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Md. The tournament was made possible by Mayo A. Shattuck, chairman, president and CEO of Constellation Energy.
An avid golfer, Mr. Shattuck has been ranked in the Top 10 of Golfing CEOs, according to Golf Digest magazine. Another golf-related charity event in which he is involved is The First Tee - PGA Tour. This organization's mission is to impact the lives of young people in a positive manner by teaching them the game of golf. By providing youth with learning facilities and educational programs, the program aims to promote character development and life-enhancing values. Mr. Shattuck's love of the game makes him the logical choice to be the visionary who would work tirelessly to ensure the creation of the tournament that would become the Constellation Energy Classic (9/11 - 9/17/2006). In the first three years, the tournament raised upwards of $1.5 million for charitable causes. This would not have been possible without Mayo A. Shattuck's visionary ideas and his commitment to bringing them to fruition.
Mayo A. Shattuck's conviction, along with Constellation Energy's corporate culture, makes the success of the Constellation Energy Classic unsurprising. Under Mr. Shattuck's leadership, Constellation Energy retained the ability to remain committed to its core values of integrity, teamwork, social and environmental responsibility, and customer focus to direct the course of its actions during its leadership change as he took the reins. For his actions, Mr. Shattuck orchestrated Constellation Energy's impressive turnaround, and today the company is on the verge of becoming a Fortune 100 company.
The amount raised by the Constellation Energy Golf Classic (9/11 - 9/17) represents a mere fraction of what Constellation Energy gives to the community and other charitable organizations. The three areas in which Constellation Energy, led by Chairman/CEO Mayo Shattuck, supports are Corporative Giving, Volunteerism and Employee Giving. Last year, Constellation Energy gave approximately $10 million through its formal corporate programs, showing its strength in corporate philanthropy after only four years into Mr. Shattuck's tenure.
Mayo A. Shattuck is more than the Chairman/CEO of Constellation Energy, a great golfer and the visionary behind the Constellation Energy Classic (9/11 - 9/17). First and foremost, Mr. Shattuck is a great leader—from the courts of Williams College, where he captained the varsity tennis team, to his current position, Mr. Shattuck also finds the time to serve in a variety of leadership capacities. Mr. Shattuck is currently a director on the boards of Gap, Inc. and Capital One Financial Corporation. He serves on the board of directors for several other organizations, including the Edison Electric Institute, Nuclear Energy Institute, and Institute of Nuclear Power Operations. Additional organizations to which Mr. Shattuck devotes his time and energy include the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Advisory Council of Stanford Business School, the Board of Walters Art Museum, and as chairman of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Under the tutelage of a leader of Mayo A. Shattuck's caliber, Constellation Energy has compiled many industry awards. During 2004, only three short years after Mr. Shattuck joined the organization, the Edison Electric Institute awarded Baltimore Gas and Electric with its Emergency Assistance Award for its role in power restoration in Florida after the series of hurricanes that swept through the area. In that year, Constellation Energy was also awarded the Platts Energy Company of the Year Award for its leadership in the North American competitive electricity marketplace and impressive growth. These two achievements were in no small part attributable to Mayo A. Shattuck. The panel of international judges cited several factors in determining the winner. As the largest energy provider to commercial and industrial customers, Constellation Energy has achieved vigorous double digit growth over the course of Mr. Shattuck's time with the company.
In 2005, Constellation Energy was once again an industry leader. Amongst energy companies, Constellation Energy garnered top honors, ranking No. 1, and making the list of Fortune's list of America's Most Admired Companies. This honor is based on the assessment of several areas, including: innovation, employee talent, financial soundness, management quality, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, long-term investment and quality of products and services. That was not the only award Constellation Energy was recognized for. The winner of the 2005 Edison Award, the electric power industry's highest honor, Constellation Energy was lauded for its leadership in the competitive energy marketplace and the successful execution of its competitive business strategy. This award is given to the organization that makes the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of the electric power industry.
Clearly, Mayo A. Shattuck's leadership had something to do with Constellation Energy's recent success. An inspiring leader, he has enabled Constellation Energy to stay true to its core values and provide top performance in the areas of speed, accountability, passion for excellence and creation of value as benchmarks for results as it seeks to make a place as a truly visionary company.
With this understanding of Constellation Energy as an organization, led by Mayo A. Shattuck as its Chairman/CEO, we can fully expect the Fourth Constellation Energy Classic to be as fun and successful as the first three. The Classic began Monday, September 11, and will end on Sunday, September 17.
